Training & CPD

We know that the prospect of talking about tricky themes with young people could feel daunting, even with a full set of resources and guidance notes to support you. And we are here to help.

Whether you and your colleagues can set aside a day, a half day, or you can only spare 90 minutes at the end of the day, we can provide CPD to help familiarise you with the Sometimes it Hurts stories, themes, resources and creative approach.

Creating a space for a young person to realise they are not alone, it isn’t their fault, and it is okay to express their thoughts and feelings about tricky things happening at home, could transform their wellbeing and life outcomes. Young people told us these stories, “100% should be delivered to schools and teachers”.

We have designed two CPD session to help you help the young people you work with to cope with their experiences. This training has been developed by drawing from learning generated by our Research Assistant, through conversations with the teachers, social workers, children and young people who piloted our resources in 2023/2024. Victims in their Own Right

Understanding young people’s experience of domestic abuse

This will be a 90-minute myth-busting style introduction to children and young people’s experiences of domestic abuse designed to support all staff (regardless of role or experience) to develop a nessential understanding of:

  • The diversity of manifestations, demographics and impact.
  • The challenges that different demographic characteristics can create for those affected.
  • The more – and less – helpful responses to those affected.
  • The stereotypes and misperceptions we need to be mindful to avoid.

We can deliver our Victims in their Own Right CPD session in your setting, or online at a time and date to suit you. This may be after school while staff are still on site, or during the day. We are happy to work around your availability as we understand that educational professionals have a busy and demanding timetable.  Our team can work with your whole staff team in this session or with a selected group, ideally of in a group of up to 10 staff.

Stories that Speak

How to use the Sometimes it Hurts creative resources
This will be a half-day practical delivery-focused session to give you confidence to use our beautifully illustrated stories and specially-created learning resources with your young people. Participants will be introduced to the resources and the role they can play in your work with young people. Our pilot schools have used the resources both in a:
  • One-to-one pastoral context with young people they already know to be affected.
  • Whole class context to open a dialogue about abuse, neglect and divorce, which may be a key mechanism for you to identify who needs support, as, without these themes being talked around openly, young people might not identify themselves as experiencing this and as in need of support.

These sessions are suitable for staff working directly with young people (as class teachers, youth workers, counsellors or in other safeguarding or pastoral roles) and will give an opportunity for those attending to become Sometimes it Hurts champions, equipped to share the resources, and encourage their use, amongst your wider teams.

We hope that by taking part in the CPD, more professionals working with young people will feel confident and empowered to support young people with the tricky subject of abuse.
